Garden Tuesday!

We are starting to see a lot of sprouts!!! The kids are so excited!!!
With Summer started for 2 of my 3 kids, these plants are seeing a lot of water! haha!! I love how fragrant they are and how much they get the kids to ask so many questions and just sit and observe!

Back in the Garden!

We are back in the garden, this time the container garden! I found a fantastic deal on plants at Lowes while we were out and had to pick up some plants! There were not many left, but we made do! I found  tomato, basil, lavender, pepper and strawberry plants all for 1.50 each! Then as we were walking to the register, I found the flat of assorted flowers for 1.79, so I grabbed one of those too! The kids and I had a blast putting in the soil and then watering, they have become pros by now and barely needed my help at all!
My youngest had a blast scooping the dirt, he designated that 'his' job! The oldest liked watering the plants and my oldest boy, loved squeezing the plants out of the flats they came in! Everyone seems to have found their 'place' in the garden!
The other sweet treat we found was hummingbird nectar! We are so excited to make a hummingbird feeder this Summer! I love the hardware store, it's always a treasure box of items that BEG to be used in ways other than their intended purpose!!

What are you up to on this fine Saturday?

Headed Outdoors!

With the rain held at bay and the sun shining bright, we decided to work a bit backwards today! We usually start our lesson over a relaxed breakfast once the older kids are off at school and the house has settled a bit, but today was just SCREAMING for us to get outside ASAP! This week we are studying butterflies and I knew that I wanted to get a butterfly feeder into our garden, so that is exactly what we worked on first! My son had no clue what we were doing, but he had a blast sitting in the grass with some glue and what looked to be fancy dishes!! We glued some thrift store finds together and once it dried, we added some over ripe food that was headed to compost on the saucer and some sugar water into the cup! I thought this looked too cute!!
It wasn't all about studying though! We took some time to gather acorn caps and play cars too! As we played, we talked about butterflies and trees and even laid down to see if we could identify anything in the clouds!

When it got a bit too warm, we took a break with some lemonade inside and sat with our books! These are great resources and my son loved to look at the pictures up close with a magnifying glass!! We took a small plastic butterfly and threw it into the air and then took turns catching it in the butterfly net! I think I had more fun than Roman on that one! hahaa!

After lunch was through, we headed outdoors again and got some lettuce planted into our newest planter that has been added to our container garden! Last year we have a super successful garden and I am aiming to have the same this year! Salads always seem to taste better when the food is fresh and grown right at home!

What did you do outside?

In The Garden With Kids!

If there is one thing I love to do in the outdoors, it's gardening! It's another one of those Summer Memories that I have with my grandfather on my fathers side. He still keeps a very large garden and we still go there and pick veggies, the only difference is that I go there with my own children and not my parents! (WOW!).

We started our herb garden today and each child had a blast getting involved in their own special ways!! We had garden scoopers, seed pourers and waterers! In honor of earth day we truly had a blast getting muddy!
Since the weather finally started to warm up again (did I mention SNOW last weekend???), the kids hit the water table again! I was THRILLED when I found a Ziploc freezer bag FULL of different sized scoops at a garage sale (.05)!!! This has been the MOST LOVED part of the table! We broke it off into 2 sections. 1 with just water and ducks and all water toys. The other half has these containers, scoops and funnels. The kids LOVE IT! They have a blast filling and squirting and just being silly. Who would have thought that the normal things EVERYONE throws away, are their treasures pieces!
Our very unhealthy but delicious snack that tied in perfectly? Worms in dirt of course!!!

Gummy Worms
Chocolate Pudding
Crushed Oreo Cookies

What did you do to honor Earth Day?

The Week in Photos!

Look at what the Leprechaun brought! The kids had to follow his footsteps to see all the goodies he brought them! After finding out the mischief that he caused! (He put the boys sock bin in Autumn's room and her sock bin in the Boy's dresser! He also dropped some green food coloring in the milk!). We are looking to make a small herb container garden, so he brought us those goodies and some Science books to read an also some fantastic reference fan out cards about the 50 states for our geography corner and one about trees for our nature table to help us identify the leaves we find!

BOATS! We made sponge boats while learning about floating and sinking and wind power! We made them for our craft-of-the-day and then floated them in the newly-uncovered-for-the-Season water table! (can you tell how excited we are for Spring in the Midwest??)
Our Nature Table is finally ready for Spring, now that we have cleared out the Winter finds!
Read more on yesterday's post at Corner of my Home!
This is our educational nook, it was a disaster from a busy weekend, so I got to work this week in organizing it back to how it should look! I will go into more depth on this corner of my home next week!
Another craft-of-the-day project! We made tea bags Waldorf style for our tea parties! This was an easy and fun project that even the 3 year old got involved with!

Another excellent week has gone by and I would like to think I am quite Blessed!
