And Then I Woke Up...

Hello everyone! My goodness, as I blow the dust off this blog I am left thinking about so much that has been going on over here. Bloggers out there in the world, do you ever have that feeling where even though you are busy every minute of every day (or at least it seems that way), they you are just not creating anything blog worthy? Yes, vacations and getaways are spectacular but at the same time...well I want to LIVE them and not be a slave to my camera. Have you reached the point where the school work that used to be cute and creative is just WORK now? I have taken photos of the kids at the board doing Algebra and yet what can I say about it? There are no cute games for Algebra! I had decided to step away for a bit and re-evaluate where this blog should go...and then I woke up.
There will always be things to blog about, meals to prepare and fun games to play and learn from. As the kids get older the posts may be fewer and farther between but there will always be blog worthy parts of our life, why? Because I love my life and every miniscule part of it. What may not be interesting to others, may in fact be a time capsule for my children to look back at when they are older. A digital scrapbook is what I have created and though I may not have been blogging for anyone in particular in the past, now I blog for them. These past few months have had us preparing for our County Fair with 4-H and all of their projects and judging and then they found out they made it to the State Fair and it was a whirlwind trip downstate. Here is my daughter at the fashion show for sewing. She made that skirt, those cuffs and that scarf. It's amazing what kids can do when you let their imaginations go wild. Me? I can't sew a button on straight and look at her, taking on the world. She went on to win the Champion prize in this competition!
As we continue down the path of growth, I will share the fun of being a parent to teenagers, the vacations we take and how to prepare for them (we are headed to the beach, Disney and a cruise VERY SOON!). I will still share my menu plans, the activities and sports in the world of homeschooling, along with just every day bits and pieces of my life. I may only blog once a month or every day for a week...it will happen and life will get in the way but I will try and keep a record of it as much as I can. I needed that wake up call, the realization that I blog for me, for them. It's easy to take photos and have them stack up in my phone but to be able to put some out there as a memory that will be here long after I am gone. It's something they can share with their own children.
The fair season took us down several new paths. At the beginning of Spring we brought home a new pet or shall I say our first ever pet. My youngest decided to begin raising a show rabbit and Carrots entered our life. It has been great fun and also been quite the lesson in responsibility. I am proud to say I have not once walked the rabbit (crazy right?!) nor have I ever cleaned his litter (he is a house broken rabbit). He is a Crème D' Argent bunny and is just about reaching his maximum size. It has definitely thrown a kink in many plans as we have brought a rabbit with us on vacation and camping and even on long road trips! Carrots has needed a sitter when we were gone too long and sometimes he even comes with to grandma and grandpas house!
While Carrots was being shown at the fair, my middle son fell in love with a new litter of Polish rabbits (not too new, they were 2 months old) and well of course one went home with us. Cocoa is the newest addition to our family and this will only get a wee bit bigger. It has been a lot of fun watching my boys grow up as they become responsible pet owners. This responsibility will follow them through life and it was something they needed to learn. We will soon begin showing them the cost of having a pet and discuss money and other things, I will post more about this in the future!
Out of nowhere, my shy and quiet middle son decided he wanted to do a food demonstration and enter that competition category this year. I was so PROUD to see him step out of his shell and take on this new challenge that I didn't care how he did, just that he was doing it! He ended up taking Champion on this too! It was an amazing moment to see his eyes register the win and me? Well I was the nerd mom crying in the second row. It wasn't because he won, it was because he was willing to tackle something new and though he was nervous he did it! If you care to see it, here is him practicing at home, I am laughing a lot and I don't even know if we finished the entire video but we were just being silly at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzwCit0-xb0
At the end of fair season, the kids entered 36 projects and ended up with 34 blue ribbons winners (my youngest has green as he is in a different age group) and 2 red ribbon second place winners. They worked so hard this year that they learned their hard work can take them anywhere they want to be. I was there to answer questions and of course help them find things but the rest was up to them and they did a phenomenal job with it all.
This Spring and Summer our National Parks passport has seen a lot of action as we took off in search of history, our swimsuits have been in lakes, oceans, rivers, streams, waterparks and hotel pools this Spring and Summer as we have ventured off many beaten trails to encounter new adventures. Our vehicle has had many miles of dirt roads, gravel trails and highways as we picked up and saw our surroundings but mostly our family has experienced so much time together that we have grown to learn more about one another. Small hotel rooms, tiny tents, cramped backseats, loaded train cars and over flowing buses...we have traveled them all in the desire to see more and learn more and we also came out loving more. The world can be anything we want it to be and as a family we are all seeing it through the same eyes and yet different ones too. Life is all about living and we are doing plenty of it.
As a new school year begins, we may spend some time in the classroom but we will make sure that we spend more time out of it. Learning is happening all around and life is sailing by, we don't want to miss a minute. We only have these few years with our children and if you take the time to realize that at 11 years old our oldest will only be living under our roof a handful of years more, it's why we do what we do. The bulk of her life under our guiding hand has come and gone so quickly that we need to hang on to these slivers we have left. The middle son is only one year behind her and the youngest 2 years behind him. The time goes too fast, though I want to take it all back and do more, I am eager to send them out into this world and see what they can do with all that they have been given and developed on their own.
Enjoy every minute my friends, the time goes and before we know it we only have memories...Photobucket

A Thankful Heart...

Happy Thanksgiving from The Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls and our family to yours!! I truly hope that it is an amazing day full of love, fun and food for all.
Charlie the elf is back! He has built a staircase out of cardboard and snuggled up in a big black chair with a slice of pie, Hot Coffee his reindeer, Inside Out the movie and his letter to the kids. The kids are beyond excited to see him and cannot wait for the season of Charlie antics! Keep up in this main post HERE with everything he has going on this year.
Enjoy every minute my friends!

Feeling Creative and Cozy

This year for Christmas we are surprising our kids with a Disney Cruise we are taking next year. I have been collecting and ordering things for the surprise as well as things that I like to call Disney Mail that will arrive once a month until 2 months before the trip and then they will begin to arrive once a week. I like to build the anticipation, so that they are not just looking forward to one day, but what may come before that day. I recently found this Free Printable HERE and knew that it would be easy to find a Disney picture frame to do this. Once the frame arrived, I printed out this sheet and it was perfect! I cannot wait to see their expression as the countdown gets smaller and smaller. I know that they will be excited to count down each day on the frame and erase the previous one. Another idea would be to buy a plane and unfinished wood frame and have your kids decorate it themselves and you can change it out for each vacation that you are counting down to.
We are expecting snow here in the Midwest this weekend and this morning felt extra chilly. It felt like the perfect day to grab breakfast at Dunkin Donuts and have some hot chocolate and then do our school work for the day right there. I love taking these kids out and about and they enjoy it too. I often times realize that they seem to focus more when we are outside of our home classroom.

I like the DD in our neighborhood as it only seems to get crowded inside during the evening hours and the drive thru is crowded the rest of the day, this makes it the perfect place for homeschoolers! We can usually hang out a few hours and get some work done while chatting and snacking and having fun together.
Enjoy every minute my friends!

87 Years of Wisdom

"I learn something new every day", this is a quote I grew up hearing often and then it was quickly followed by "I'm xx years old and I'm still learning!" My grandfather just turned 87 on Saturday and we all spent the day with him have a fantastic time. We heard stories for the millionth time, heard new tales and even laughed until we cried, sang until our throats were sore and ate until we thought we may slip into a food coma. It's not every day that we get to dine with a legend and yes, I truly think my grandfather is one.
9 Things About My Grandfather:
1.~ He ALWAYS has a Jalapeno in his pocket...ALWAYS.
2.~ He left home at the age of 12, so his family would have more food.
3. ~ He was headed for Minnesota on a freight train, when he was beat with a club out of a hay bale and kicked off the train in Chicago, that's how our family ended up here.
4. ~ He showed up as a guest to a friend's wedding, when a groomsman got sick, they grabbed him to accompany the extra girl...that ended up being my grandma.
5. ~ He is ALWAYS in a suit...ALWAYS...
6. ~ He can barely get in or out of his sportscar, but he is still driving around in one that he trades in every few years for another.
7.~ He packed lettuce, picked cotton, drove semis back and forth over the border, drove tractors for farmers and collected bottles for people making their own liquor in basements, all before he was 14.
8. ~ The only family photo he has with both of his parents and all his brothers and sisters was taken in his living room....with his mother in her coffin, dead.
9. ~ He is amazing.
Enjoy every minute my friends!

Picture Books & Meals on Monday

Happy Monday my friends, what a long and wonderful break. I needed a break from it all and found solace with my grandmother. She passed on 17 years ago, but I was so close to her that it was a devastating loss to me and she is one person that I think about daily. I really wish she could have met my husband and children. Sometimes a calming moment with her makes the start of the year something to look forward to. I hope you all are ready for this new year as well!
In this New Year I am hoping to spend more time with the Good Lord and reading his word. I plan on journaling more often and listening more. This is also something I am introducing into our religion class and hope that it makes for a very spiritual 2015
Why is it that we all begin to organize in the beginning of a year too? Our classroom is undergoing a makeover to adjust to our daily needs now that we have older students and no beginning readers or kids learning how to count and the like. One thing we still have though? Picture Books! We will keep these forever!! I despise book jackets though, they are too pretty to toss but to delicate for little hands that love to love books so what do we do? Use them as display, works of art and eye catching design in a library, playroom or classroom! Staple them up if you will not need them again or even frame them and hang them to preserve their life. Why hide the jackets, when they, like the books, are true works of art?!
Our oldest turns 10 today...double digits?! Where did the years go and how have I not aged a bit??!! Hahaha, well I will post more on this beautiful princess that captured our hearts upon her first breath and never really gave them back. She is our angel that continues to bring us so much joy and happiness.

Goodbye 2014!

As we close out a year and I reflect back on what was 2014, I am just left a muddled mess. This was a year of love, loss, togetherness, family, distance, travel and so much more. We lost loved ones, welcomed new ones and did so much. We took a large paycut to have more family time and this year saw us lose family members, not to death, but by choice. Sometimes it is necessary to just cut the stress out of your life.
Homeschooling reached a stride where I no longer felt the need to compete with other schools but to challenge my children in new and creative ways, where they learned more than they ever could about topics that interest them and still kept up with their book studies as well.
2014 became the year of our family, we decided it was time to make a difference in our surrounding world by helping out and to strengthen our bonds as parents, lovers and people. It was also time to become a true family unit that shares, plays and talks. We had dinner together every single night in 2014. This sometimes meant eating a very early dinner or a very late one, but we always ate together. This is now our priority. If my husband and I had a date night, we still 'ate' with the kids before we headed out, by sitting and chatting with them at the table.
The year taught us a lot about people and places and things. It made us realize how so much in life is unnecessary and just a waste of time. As our kids grew older and wiser, we learned more about them and they about us. They seemed to really grow into their personalities this year.
Our travels took us out of state 10 times this year and to 7 different states. We made each opportunity a learning one and in doing that we all had fun learning new things. This was a year of blessings and triumphs as well as troubles and scares. We had a happy 2014 but only hope that 2015 brings us an even better year.
Thank you all for sticking by me this year and for your comments and messages. I truly appreciate each and every one of you and wish nothing but the best for your 2015. As our children grow older, let me remind you once again to take the time to enjoy every minute.

Happy Saturday!

Today was our Sams Club stock up day, you know the type...load up the top and bottom of the cart so high that you can't see and then have a minor coronary when the total rings up? The ones where you start out so great with boxes and organized packing but then eventually you run out of boxes and are just shoving stuff wherever it fits! This is our one weekend a month that we spend at home deep cleaning, working on another remodel on our list and shopping.
Today was the start of winter project #1. We finished half of the attic when we bought the house for our daughter to use as a room, the other half remained unfinished. Today the old subflooring was torn up and a new one was put down along with running new electrical. This will be a project that will most likely last all winter but I am glad to get it started. This half of the attic will become a hang out room for the kids and their friends. It will house comfy chairs, bookshelves, a table, tv and game consoles along with board games, a minifridge and other odds and ends.
Enjoy every single minute my friends!!

Please Stop Talking...

Wow, that certainly say so much doesn't it? I am finding out all too well that we as a nation are glorifying the word busy. I am not accusing anyone here but myself, but I hear it so much that at some point it really makes me stop and think to myself. In all honesty if we were to cut out some of our day to day activities would anything REALLY change? Would the world end? I always start thinking this way when the holidays are right around the corner. That is the time that really has me going nuts. It seems we are all in a hurry to please someone or to make it look like we are super-parent or something...maybe it is a desire to give our kids all that we didn't have or do all the things we wished we could have done but those are dangerous waters. When will we realize that the only thing our children really need is love? After all these outings, classes and vacations what do they remember the most? That you were all together and laughing. I know it's an easy thing to say but is it that easy to put into practice? I know, I am rambling now...oh well it's food for thought.
On to why I really came over to the blog today! Repurposing is something that you hear from me daily (I know STOP talking already right?!) but it is something that helps us extend the life of our toys. These cards have lower case letters on them and the barrel of monkeys have upper case letters written on them! It makes for a fun matching game.
Link them as normal but in ABC order, play with the cards alone or match and then link. There are so many ways to play this one and all of my kids loved it. As I ready so many of my pre-k manipulatives to sell, I am reminded on how the simple things that I created for them are the ones that bring back more memories than the toys. I remember them taking this game to grandpas and linking them from a light switch and then forgetting all about it and grandpa went in and was a bit confused! I remember them linking them on the coat hook in the van and one big turn made the monkeys fly all over the van! What laughter that brought about. These were definitely made with love!
Used to teach sight words they were such a fun tool that the kids never 'got' that they were doing school work, only figured that they were having fun. Yup, that's what it is all about. Everything in life won't be learned from text book but on the laps of their parents. The basics are all we truly need to get through our day to day lives.
Don't you ever doubt it my friends! You truly are an amazing person. Now remember to enjoy every single minute because in all the business it goes by far too quickly! ;)

Keep it Simple...

I hope your weekend was fantastic! We are in the middle of a wonderful one, visiting old friends, new friends, family and hanging out together. On Halloween, we spent the day with new friends at an assisted living facility. My children made Halloween cards and it was time to hand deliver them. For every holiday, we usually pick a different facility in the area and deliver them there. It is amazing to see the joy and love in their faces when they get to see and speak with children.

They let the kids go on a pumpkin hunt around their facility and keep the pumpkins they found! They even told them to take as many as they wanted. It was a wonderful experience for ALL involved.

"Mom, this is like EASTER! I love hunts"
These pudding snacks were a hit at our Halloween party & are very inexpensive to make!
