Saturday School Round-Up

Our new school year started on Monday! I know, I know, we school year round but we made it special none-the-less! Fresh supplies were put out, new books had their spines cracked and I added a desk to the classroom. I now have my very own teacher desk, with a new schedule. We spend the first 2 weeks tweaking our schedule and seeing what works for us and what does not. I also spend this time making notes on curriculum.
Organization is key in homeschooling and this year is no different! I purchased a storage unit from The Container Store, to keep everyone's school books, folders and notebooks in line. Everyone has a drawer and this is where they can find everything and put it all away. My master copies of books are also in a drawer!! I plan on finding cute tags to tag the unit properly.
New year, means new decor. There is only so much I can do in a one room classroom but I like to change it up often. New in our classroom is our book garland! These little books get a title written on them when we complete a book and they are displayed for all to see that visit us here.
They are eager to learn and having a blast working on new books!
This is next week's topic in creative writing and it really has me thinking about what exactly would it be....more on my answer next week. Enjoy the weekend my friends.

Shark Time!

Happy Friday my friends, I love this day of the week more than anything. It's always the promise of something exciting. We studied sharks this past week in school and had some fun doing it.
We took some time to read about different sharks and see if we could guess which ones were what. I like to keep books on hot topics in shelf bins so that they can all be removed at once.
Building a large model of a shark was so much fun! Over the Summer, we built it once before, so that the kids would figure out how to do it on their own and get a rough idea for it. Now they were able to do it together and they learned as they were building it!
What better way to end the day, then a movie on sharks, courtesy of NETFLIX! What fun it was to learn about something that truly excites us!

Thoughts on Thursday...

This Thursday as we are out on a new adventure, I want to share some thoughts with you:
::I love being behind the camera
::I really think I am the luckiest wife on earth
::True joy hits me at the most random times and I grin like a crazy person
::I sometimes think I am an insomniac because my life is so Blessed, I don't want to sleep it away
::The best souvenirs are often free
::A simple smile from a stranger has the power to make the day amazing
::I love to dish out 3 compliments a day to strangers
::I find holding hands to be a way to pass strength to someone
I find peace in so many places, that I work them into my routine when I can:
::Book Shoppes are my Shangri la
::Farmers Markets can keep me occupied for hours
::Being in the garden relaxes me
::Charity Shops are my adventure
::Beaches are my playground

Wordless Wednesday...(nearly)

Late night miniature golfing had us tired but laughing hysterically.
I love letting them loose in a book store, because I always find them huddled together.
Starbucks is our favorite getaway after a busy school day!
Enjoy every minute my friends...

Lesson in Literacy!

Happy Tuesday! Today was one of those days that I woke up excited for it to be Wednesday and then BAM, I was rapidly stuck with reality of it being only Tuesday. I blame the long night out in the wonderful weather at the ballpark! Oh well, just 1 more day to enjoy, right?? Right???
Last week my neighbor surprised me with this AWESOMELY huge bin of foam shapes. It was going to take FOREVER to sort but well worth the fun in the end. I knew if we didn't sort it, it would hardly get used. We broke it down into Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Letters, Numbers, Shapes. Each category is safely stored in a clear shoe box that allows the kids to see which one they would like.
I knew instantly that the letters would see overtime use. Our first lesson was in spelling. My youngest had to READ his spelling words, then search for each letter to spell that word with.

As he found a letter he used a paintbrush and dipped it into a cup of water to 'paint' the letter. He then stuck to to the wall of a clear bin! (The now empty foam bin!) This is a great way for him to work on letter recognition, blending sounds as he spells the words slowly and spelling of course!
Enjoy every minute of this TUESDAY my friends!

Menu Plan Monday!

Happy Monday my friends!! I hope your weekend was absolutely delightful! We had so much fun with an old friend of mine from college in Chicago and then spent Sunday in the suburbs at a fun French Market! Madeline story times, traipsing through a rose garden, shopping for wonderful wares and then enjoying crepes in the shade of the 'Eiffel tower'. I love the warmer months in the Midwest as it allows for so many activities!
Monday brings our Menu Plan!
Monday: Tickets to a baseball game! We're eating at the ballpark!
Tuesday: Pizza Wheels with Garden Picked Salad
Wednesday: Grilled Portabella Burgers with Caprese Salad
Thursday-Sunday (Out of town but we left a full fridge for our house sitters!)
A short week of meals for sure but delicious fun none-the-less! I hope you all take the time to realize just how much you truly have. Enjoy every minute!

Roman's Traveling Truck

Let's go on a road trip! This year for Geography I want Roman to have a more visual way of learning. That's where his traveling truck comes in, and so do you and your children!! If you would like to help us out, please go HERE and print out the truck. Then you can color and cut it out if you would like and take a picture of the truck somewhere fun. Next, head over to our FACEBOOK PAGE HERE & upload the photo to our wall with a city/state/country location. That's it! No stamps, printing out of photos, Post Office, nothing.
Once we get your photo, we will add your location to our map! Anywhere in the world works! We even have a WORLD map to pin on! Thank you so much for helping us out!! This is a YEAR ROUND project and you can post photos anytime you want. If you go to multiple destinations, please keep posting the trucks travels.
Enjoy every minute my friends!

Busy Binder

Happy day my friends! I hope you all are doing very well! We took off last week for a mini vacation to the waterpark capital of the world, Wisconsin Dells and had an absolutely fabulous time! Now we are back and ready to begin the new school year. Can you believe how quickly time flies? This year I have a 5th grader and 3rd grader that are going to need a lot of my time in the morning as I introduce new things and concepts. As this is happening, I created a BUSY BINDER for my youngest who will be in 1st grade.
This binder is housed in Roman's School Bin (will share these in another post) and he grabs it as soon as he enters the classroom. Each paper is in a page protector so that it becomes an instant wipe board. A square of fabric can be easily used as an eraser, but we use a small eraser from the Dollar Spot at TARGET!!
Store your dry erase markers, pencil & eraser and any other supplies your child will need for the binder in a pencil pouch that easily clips right into the binder. Having everything in 1 place makes it easier for your student to just grab and go in the morning.

The first 2 pages will help him work on spelling out months and days of the week, along with writing down numbers of which day it is.
On the calendar page he writes the name of the month again and circles the day that it is today. On the printable pages for you, I left the numbers off for you to fill in, so that you can print it up multiple times, instead of having months where day 1 may not begin on Thursday.
Next, is his address. He works on writing it in. This is also great handwriting practice, since he needs to stay in the lines. For Roman, I filled in parts of the address and he has to fill in the blanks. As he gets better, I remove some of the parts I filled in until it gets completely blank like this.
Next, is a phone number page where he fills out his phone number. Roman knows many of these pages from Kindergarten work but it's good repetition, to stay in his brain!
The binder also holds 2 different types of paper for handwriting improvement. The child lined paper helps Roman work on straightening his letters and keeping his words clutter free.
Regular student paper is perfect for him to start practicing his writing. This also allows him a place to doodle if he has some free time.
A 100s chart allows him to work on counting to 100 while crossing off the numbers as he goes. Sometimes I will put blue painters tape pieces on multiple numbers to have him fill in the blanks. (I use painters tape, because it will peel off easily)
I created this document of Sight Words that every First Grader must know from a reference book that I use. I just typed them up and put it in this book. On this page Roman reads the words that he can and puts a line through them if he knows them. I also take 5 words a week from this list and they are his spelling words for that week, that way he is tested on them as well.
Using Baseball card sleeves (still can be used as a wipe board), I inserted the flashcards that came with our reading program. He fills out the missing letters in each word. These start out easily with just 1 letter missing and then get more difficult as he progresses through them. Missing 2 letters, missing 2 letters and finally missing all letters and just containing the photo.
The last section just has all his sight word flashcards for him to work on and cross off the words that he knows as he goes. He pretty much knows all of these, but it's good reinforcement for what he knows.

The final section of our Busy Binder holds addition and subtraction flashcards. Our normal sized ones did not fit in here, so I printed some on card stock FROM HERE. I wish I had colored card stock to make them prettier but alas, no such luck. I am trying to figure out a way to laminate his number line and pop it in there too, so that he can use it if needed as he gets more familiar with memorizing.
I hope that you can find use for these things that I have shared with you, please feel free to use them, just link back to me if you use them online. HERE IS WHERE you can find these sheets to print out on your own! If you have questions, please feel free to ask! If you add anything else to your binders please share in the comments below! I love this binder because it is so portable and can even go on vacation with us, plane rides, Dr. office and car trips!
