Classroom Coordination

I should be sleeping but instead I am still awake blogging. I seriously need to get on a better schedule but all I do is say that and never work towards it. Must work towards it! I have a tour of my classroom coming up this week for you all but for now I wanted to share the way I display my posters in the classroom. If I have multiples that are similar, I hang them back to back on cup hooks. This allows me to change them out regularly and it also gives me the added bonus of adding on coordinating flashcards for the kids to use as they interact with the poster.

My Solar System border sits at the top of the wall but right below it on a cup hook are planet flashcards. They have the exact same photos as the ones in the border, which make it super easy for kids to see the planets in their correct location and learn even more about them. Also in the photo, you can see a cup hook holding a Presidents Card, this hook holds many government Flash Charts all in one spot. I don't have to keep them hidden away in a binder, which makes them do double duty! They are a decoration but ALSO they can and often times are just grabbed and read!

This corkboard USA has a ring of matching state cards directly below it but the best part of this piece is that we have started marking the states we have visited. It's so much fun to begin learning with the places we have been. Little by little as we travel the USA, the kids are getting HANDS ON learning but even better is that they sit by this map with the cards and look at where they want to go next.

This MASSIVE world map takes up a large chunk of wall space, it is so detailed and perfect that the kids and I often just attack it with Dry Erase markers making notes of where we have been and where we want to go. To the left of the it, is the hook that holds the Countries and Capitols cards. As we discuss where we would LOVE to go, we read all about it.

Our Government section. The Flash Charts that I mentioned earlier along with the cup hooks holding multiple posters that can be changed out. These are all laminated as well because they are really PLACEMATS!! It allows the kids to take them down and write on them. Using the coordinating flashcards, this is an easy CENTER in the room for use during Quiet Time.

I also have an ever changing display in a small nook of the room. This has a topic of the month that will change out periodically along with coordinating books. On the clothesline above it will be changing topics, art work or anything at all that we can think of!
The Multiplication Table chart is one of the reasons I came up with the cupholders, I like it out for the kids to work with along with flashcards but when it was time for a test, I wanted to have it covered without making an extra mess or having to do too many steps.
The Numbers chart is another sign on the cup hooks with the Multiplication Chart that I switch out with when needed. It's so easy to do that the kids often help me out.

Enjoy the weekend my friends!

Math Folders & 5-A-Day

Wow, it was an insanely busy weekend and I am so sorry that I forgot to post about our Math folders and 5-A-Day books from last week. I am going to update all of that today! As I mentioned on Friday, we don't do a math notebook, I put the information on manila folders for them and then cover it in packing tape, so that they can write on it as though it were a dry erase board. In these folders, I have a stapled pack of computer paper for them to use as scratch paper. They just tear off a page and attach it to the work they are turning in, that way there is no roaming around during tests looking for paper or during homework time. They are not allowed the folders during tests, just during learning times. All links to the items I used in my folders are found HERE!

I have a place value chart which is really helping my first grader as he works with them. It allows them to plug the number in and find out what the place value is, if there is a decimal point in the number, you put that in first and then the numbers! So cute! Gallon Measurement page is helpful to a couple of them and my first grader is using the regrouping page, which is so helpful. There is also a DIVISION chart. Once again all pages can be found here!
I made up this measurement chart that my daughter was struggling with. This one has helped her the most and I am glad it helped her, as she reviews it daily she is able to memorize it.
Multiplication Tables are helpful to the 2 oldest and while my oldest knows her flashcards within 2 seconds, my youngest is working on getting there, so hopefully this will help him as much as it helped Autumn. You can find the link to the original HERE.
This past week, we really enjoyed our 5-A-Day. Every other week, I allow Roman to pick the 5 and as you can tell by the selection. He chose:
I Just Forgot
Plenty of Penguins
Penguins
Race Around The World
Ratatouille
How true is this? Have a great Monday friends!

I've been invited to try Time4Learning's online curriculum in exchange for an honest review. My opinion will be entirely my own, so come back and read about my experience! Learn how to use it for homeschool, as an afterschool study program or for summer learning.

Fun with the States!

My kids are studying Presidents, States and Capitols right now and I am always on the look out for anything related to any of those topics. The kids can use them for years to come and there are always ways to make them fun.

While shopping at the thrift lately, I found the EXACT SAME Fandex that we already own and for only .49!!! What a STEAL! While my husband didn't understand why on earth I would want another one, my brain was already running away with ideas.

Using our EXTRA State Fandex that we found for less than .50 at a thrift, we made a fun game and Geography Lesson!
1.Autumn & Gabriel cut out each of the states very carefully around the outline.
2. Roman cut out the State names when they were done.
3. All 3 kids based on sight alone attempted to match up state shapes with names and tape the name on the back.
4. With the leftover states, they used the complete fandex to put the correct names to states.

5. With each state having the name on the back, we now have visual flashcards!
6. We can put together a large USA map on the floor.
7. With the capitol of each state starred on the state, we can even play states and capitols.

So many fun uses and learning opportunities for so very little!
