Science Fun

Spring is right around the corner and we cannot WAIT for the snow to melt and our gardening to begin. While we wait for that moment, we are beginning our garden indoors for Science Class as we observe plants as they grow. The easiest plant to start with was green onions. We bought some for our Baked Potato Night and here they are after being chopped. I bound them together with a rubberband as the kids filled a glass jar with water. 

Less than 1 week later and we have more than enough for our potato soup dinner tonight! Isn't it amazing?! The kids say they can SEE IT GROWING! They all find it so amazing that it happens so quickly, that the love to just sit and watch it. I love projects that are easy and bring them together.

Back in the Garden!

 We are back in the garden, this time the container garden! I found a fantastic deal on plants at Lowes while we were out and had to pick up some plants! There were not many left, but we made do! I found  tomato, basil, lavender, pepper and strawberry plants all for 1.50 each! Then as we were walking to the register, I found the flat of assorted flowers for 1.79, so I grabbed one of those too! The kids and I had a blast putting in the soil and then watering, they have become pros by now and barely needed my help at all!

My youngest had a blast scooping the dirt, he designated that 'his' job! The oldest liked watering the plants and my oldest boy, loved squeezing the plants out of the flats they came in! Everyone seems to have found their 'place' in the garden!

The other sweet treat we found was hummingbird nectar! We are so excited to make a hummingbird feeder this Summer! I love the hardware store, it's always a treasure box of items that BEG to be used in ways other than their intended purpose!!

Little Ones....

I have 3 little ones and I love to teach them new things. I love seeing their little eyes light up when they actually understand and 'get' something! Our latest this season is our annual container garden. We started growing them when the kids were babies and figured it was time for them to tend to their own. Their 2 small boxes sit on their picnic table, so that they can actively participate in the growing. They planted them, water them and even bring them inside when the winds pick up or the rain gets to be too much. Children seem to really soak up knowledge at this age! Needless to say with a 4,3 and 1 year old they have already tipped one over a bit :) But it was a learning experience. They are seeing how it's now taking a bit longer for the strawberry seeds to sprout. I spend a lot of time with my kids often wearing me out by days end (which for me is 3am! haha), and sometimes I don't feel like it's enough! They get 1 hour of tv time in the morning that helps me get so much done, but I still feel guilty! haha! I will fully admit that I have about 3 loads of laundry sitting in the laundry room and my bedroom is a disaster. I have toys on the living room floor that should have been picked up before I sat down at the computer, but I like my quiet time. For me this time is for the children, I will never get older and say 'I wish I had cleaned up a bit more'.
