YEA!

I am home, I am alive, I am VICTORIOUS! This past weekend, I ran the Chicago Marathon. It was the biggest emotional rollercoaster I have ever been on In MY LIFE!  More so than being pregnant with raging hormones! This was actually QUITE an experience. The night before, I must have woken up every hour on the hour. I was so nervous that I would wake up and it would all be over and I missed it! hahah! When it was finally time to roll out of bed, I got ready and my stomach started to churn. The nerves mounted and I think I may have almost thrown up 3 times. I didn't want to eat, but I KNEW I had to get some food into me. 1 banana, 1 bagel and 1 bag of Sports Beans later, I was locked into my starting corral.

Before I knew it, it was time to start. My nerves were still on fire and I knew this was what I had trained for. As the miles began accumulating, I told my mother it was time to run our own race. She has a better pace than I do and I didn't want to hold her back. I want to run this race my way and I know she wanted to be there for me. We parted ways at mile 7 and that's when I realized I was all alone. Okay, with 45,000 runners, I wasn't really alone, but I was alone in my head. THAT was NOT a good place to be. The sun started to brighten and as the weather hit just about 80* I was getting negative. By mile 12, my shin splints were acting up and I wanted to just give up. Out of nowhere I started laughing like a crazy woman. Then when I pictured myself laughing out there on the course looking insane to the spectators, it only made me laugh harder. At this point in time, I knew I was losing my mind. Mile 13.1 came and that was the halfway point. Instead of saying YESSSS!!! halfway there! I said: OH MY GOD, I can't do it anymore. I was ready to throw in the towel and then I saw them, my husband and 3 children. They were definitely sent from the Lord, because it felt so good to stop and have them all hold me. The tears flowed and I couldn't stop crying. I told my husband that I didn't think I could do it anymore.

He told me how proud he was of me and my kids hugged and kissed me and told me it was time to finish what I had started. A woman that I don't know and am FOREVER GRATEFUL to, pulled me from my husband, hugged me and said 'do you want to finish this? If you do, let's go, let's DO THIS' She pulled me back on the course and told me that we may not be the hare that wins the race, but we will finish this race. DEAD last, is better than quitting and waaaaay better than not even starting.'  This woman was AMAZING and she helped me pull away and keep on going. It gave me the boost of energy that I needed as I thanked her and headed on. If you are out there, thank you so much. You were wearing an orange Diabetes Charity shirt and you were so inspirational.

I pulled ahead and kept on going, as I passed people, I stopped to walk and talk with them. I encouraged them and told them they looked great and that no matter what, we had the courage to be out there. If someone hadn't had the heart to stop and help me, I may not have finished. i had become determined to encourage everyone just as that woman had done for me. Before I knew it, mile marker 20 came into view and I was exhausted. The above photo describes it ALL. I was ready to sit down at every curb that I rounded. By mile 21, my shins were on fire and I had to stop at a medic tent and get iced up. When they asked me if I wanted to continue on, I knew there was no questions, I was TOO CLOSE to GIVE UP NOW. I was running or those that couldn't, I was running for those that didn't have the courage to try, I was running for the families of the Ronald McDonald houses. It was time to gain control of my head, my legs and DO THIS. Then it happened, at mile 25.5, I was ready to give it all up. My legs were numb and my heart was beating wildly. I stopped running and started crying. I thought for sure the end was too far away. When I looked up, it was my Daddy! He had come to help me get through this! He hugged me and told me to FINISH WHAT I HAD STARTED and OWN IT with pride! My mother had earned her medal and was right there with him. She said 'Come on sweetie, I am so proud of you' Together we ran on through the rest of the course and crossed that finish line with pride.
I earned it, I made it! I unfortunately finished over course time by about 30 minutes (10 minutes in the aid tent and 5 minutes with my husband didn't help, but I needed them both!), but I finished and I got my medal. When the man put it around my neck, I hugged him so tight, I may have frightened him. It was the greatest moment of victory I have ever felt. The pain seemed to go away and I couldn't stop smiling. I had just joined the 1% of the population that has run a marathon. I wasn't the 1st, I wasn't the last, but I finished. Thank you friends for your thoughts and prayers. You have made me feel so strong, healthy and happy. Is this the end? No, I have just found my next marathon! I am running Disney in 2012! I will do better and you know what? I will still encourage everyone I see. Thank you Chicago, for making me feel amazing and Thank you Mom, for giving me life for the 2nd time. You are a true inspiration and I am so proud of YOU.

It's Practically Here...

Well, the day is practically here! I am packing my bag, as I am being picked up at 11:30 this morning to check in to our hotel and be gone for the weekend. Today, I pick up my bib number and reality will certainly hit. All those months of training are now down to this moment on Sunday. Where did the time go? I remember just getting my registration confirmation ticket!

I really hope this fortune comes true! Glory is exactly what I will have when I cross that finish line. It's been many runs of worry and fighting bouts of nerves and the like. I still cannot believe that this is the last blog post I will put up until next week, when it's all over!

THIS is what I tell myself when my legs begin to go numb and I don't even know what is going on around me. At least I had the guts to try, to sign up and to get to the starting line. I won't be in the lead, heck I won't even be NEAR the front, but I am there and I am trying and I am having this moment that I will remember for the rest of my life.

THIS is something that I have to keep telling myself over and over again! When I reach mile 12, I start to get negative and tell myself that I'm not even half way there yet. It really is a MIND game and I must get out of my head and just GO!

OH YEAH! I've come too far to just give up, believe me, when I first started on those initial long runs of 5,6,8 miles, I used to think, WHY?! WHY?! Just QUIT, Just GIVE UP, who will really care? You know who will care the most? ME! I know sitting on the couch, before I had even signed up, I thought yeah right, no thank you. THEN once I started training seriously, I realized giving up is the EASY way out. I'm not about to take the easy way out when I have something to prove to myself and to my head and something to show my children! It's not easy getting to this point, it sure as heck isn't any fun, but you know what? I don't regret a single moment.

Ummm.....yeah...Please keep my mother and I in your prayers on Sunday!

Count to 100 in Style!

My son is learning to count to 100 and tends to get bored easily, especially when we are reviewing daily! I like to get creative with counting. Flashcards, post-its, poker chips, pennies etc. When I came across this bag of fun Halloween Erasers, the idea came right away!

I mixed up the erasers and counted out 100. Next, I printed up a 100s sheet and got to work with my little guy. He counted each number and put a little eraser on the box. As he got higher in the counting, he began to make patterns too! He had a lot of fun the best part is, that these counters can be used for various other counting games too!
Another day closer and we are now tapering down our runs. Only 3 miles today and then 2 tomorrow. I cannot believe how this day is now almost here. Where did the time go?

Thoughts for Thursday...

Today, I share a collection of random thoughts with you.
After my run, I was behind the cutest older couple. I had passed them several times on my run and always heard them laughing, telling stories and holding hands. I hope to be this happy, active and in love with my husband when we get older. Love is truly amazing!

My mother works for a large corporation that rents out the Chicago Land 6 Flags for a night, just for the corporate employees. We had an absolute blast spending time together as a family! My husband has been working so much, I almost forgot how amazing it is to be together for a full day!

My 3 kids are still loving school and loving being silly in the morning! Isn't it so much easier to get everyone out the door by 7am, when they all love their destinations? I'm truly Blessed!

The marathon is closing in on me and I can't believe it! I am in the single digits of days (9) and am actually still getting a bit anxious, nervous and doubting...This is my quote of the day! I am trying and that's all that matters.....right?

Marathon Update!

I know my posts are quite sporadic right now and unfortunately they will continue like that right now! Why? The marathon is in LESS THAN 2 WEEKS?! Where on earth did the time go? I cannot believe how quickly that this has all flown. I'm still incredibly nervous, but you know what? I'm ready!

Even though all I want to do after my long runs is sleep, we headed out to tour museums, pick pumpkins and even feed giraffes!!! It's been an amazing weekend readers and I truly can't wait for my life to get back to normal, so that I can share more fun photos!!

Marathon Update!

Saturday was my 20 mile training run. It was brutal near the end and I'm pretty sure I cried midway through, but you know what? When I finished, I was elated! I was smiling, happy and albeit sore, I knew I could still go through with the final 5 miles. (We actually did 21.2) The end of that run told me something super important, it told me: 'Heck YEAH, I can DO THIS!' As many of you know, I have been doubting myself lately. My time isn't getting any better and some of the shorter runs can really do me in, but I haven't given up and I don't plan to on October 9th either.

As fate would have it, Saturday's mail also held the Participant Guide for the marathon! WHOA! After thumbing through it, I was definitely on information overload. As I have mentioned before, this is my first Marathon EVER...wait, this is my first run of anything EVER. I have never run before, unless you count the painful mile in gym class! I started dabbling in running when I turned 30 and wanted to turn my life in a healthier direction, then this opportunity came up and I thought: 'what the heck?!' HAHAHAHA....ohhhh to be that naive again! I should have started with a 5K, but oh well that ship has sailed and I am 3 weeks until the marathon. Where on earth did the time go?!
I have gone through so many ups and downs during this training period and you want to know the hardest part of it all? The running? NO. The early mornings? NO. The simple fact that my beautiful boots no longer zip up my calves! OMG, I was honestly in tears that morning. I am a slave to my shoes and bags and when this little thing happened, I seriously melted!! How ridiculous is that?! LOL.
I want to remind you all what I am doing this. I am doing this for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. I am raising 2000.00 and am half way there. I hope that you can see how much I have worked and given especially now that my 20 miler is out of the way and I am still alive. If you can donate as little as 1.00 it would be great. These houses do so much for sick children and their families. I only ask if you can help, if you can't, it's totally understandable.

Please just keep my mother and I in your prayers as we attempt to tackle this hill together. Not only have we gotten into better shape, we have gotten to know each other more. Long runs have a way of bringing out long talks. To my mother, I would like to say:

Thank you for giving me life twice. This time you have brought out something new in me and made me feel more alive. I love you.

The Weekend...

From my family to yours, we would like to wish you a happy weekend! Stay safe and have fun. We have a lot going on once again. Sometimes I wish we could just have a 'down time' weekend where we have absolutely nothing going on and no one to entertain, but we haven't seen one of those in a LOOOOOONG time. How do you feel about your weekends? Would you rather be super busy and occupied or more relaxed and doing things as you think of them?

This is the first weekend in a long time (if ever), that I am wishing to just skip the weekend and fast forward to Monday with no memory at all of the past days. This Saturday is my 20 miler, where I will attempt to set a nice pace and see if I can get 20 miles done in a decent amount of time. If you see this on Saturday or before, please send up a little prayer and some of your strength for me! I definitely need it. I will also be breaking in a new pair of shoes, which should be interesting. My 2 new pairs have reached the end of their lifespan in training and these new ones above are what I plan to have marathon day.

Lately on my runs, I am getting back into my head and driving myself crazy. The marathon is less than a month away and I now completely terrified. I'm terrified that I did all this for nothing and am going to fail. My brain keeps telling me to quit and my shin splints are so bad that even last weekend on my 12 mile run, I was in tears. I don't want to make excuses and all I want to do is FINISH PROUD. I want to be proud of what I have accomplished and show my kids that ANYTHING they set their mind to CAN be done. I am determined to finish this, no matter how long it takes. I just need to get the positive into my head and get rid of all of that negativity that is just swimming in my brain the minute my feet hit the pavement!

Chicago Marathon News

I know father's day was a couple weeks ago now, but it's been a busy and hectic summer for me! I am now getting around to updating you on my Chicago Marathon training.  As I mentioned before, my mother and I are running the Chicago Marathon on October 9th of this year. I am terrified and excited all at once! Over Father's Day weekend, we went to the Nike Preview on Chicago's Lakefront.

We arrived just before 6am and took a scenic and glorious jog along the lake from the Shedd Aquarium to Navy Pier and back. It was so nice and fun, it just stunk that I was at the tail end of bronchitis. That was interesting to run with! haha!

They sent us our fundraising information for Ronald McDonald house Charities and that really set us into panic mode! haha! $2000.00 is what we have to raise and we have until October to do it! YIKES! If you are looking to help out in any way, you can donate as little as 1.00! Every little bit helps this cause! PLEASE CLICK HERE to donate.  The money goes straight to RMHC, I just have to send everyone to the link and well run the marathon of course! haha!!

There were a lot of awesome Nike goodies for sale at the preview and I fell in love with and had to have this awesome shirt (It says 10.9.11 Sunday Funday)! I'm excited to take on this new and fun adventure, but of course 100% scared! YIKES!
